If you’re an adult in your 20s and 30s, you’ve grown up alongside technology. You’ve poked fun at the Gen X and Boomers who struggle with X and Facebook. You’ve adapted as phones became smartphones, media became social media, and streaming went from free and convenient to expensive and impossible.

Many of us feel we’re savvy when it comes to navigating the digital world. But we’re now entering uncharted territory — one where AI introduces new, subtle, and dangerous threats, especially in the context of elections.

Fake/“bot” accounts had a massive impact in the 2016 election. AI will be even better at fooling unsuspecting audiences.

AI has advanced rapidly, to the point producing eerily realistic videos and audio that can manipulate public perception. Deepfakes feel like old news now, despite how earth-shattering Jordan Poole’s Obama video was when it first dropped.

But even with these early warnings, we haven’t substantially improved society’s AI literacy. The term is now misused, overused, and abused to the point of being completely meaningless in the minds of most people — leaving us vulnerable.
