Good Nutrition is Not Enough
True health comes from The Four Nutriments
A lot of attention is given to the food we eat. Superfoods, organic foods, paleo diets, vegetarianism and veganism.
While it is important to think about the food we eat, our happiness and well-being depends just as much on our environment, our desires, and our consciousness.
Buddhism refers to these as “The Four Nutriments of Happiness or Suffering.”
It’s “Happiness or Suffering” because… well, the things we consume can either bring us happiness or bring us suffering.
Mindfulness helps us know what we are ingesting. Are we consuming toxins of fear, hatred and violence? Or are we consuming nutriments that encourage understanding, compassion, and the determination to help others?
The Four Nutriments of Happiness or Suffering
- Edible Food — what we eat or drink can bring about mental or physical suffering. Much of our suffering comes from not eating mindfully. We have to learn ways to eat that preserve the health and well-being of our body and spirit. When we smoke, drink, or consume toxins, we are eating our own lungs, liver, and heart. Even over-indulgence of healthy foods can leave us feeling sick and full of regret.
